Legacy giving

Sometimes the support we would like to show an organisation isn’t possible in our lifetime.

Many of the College’s alumni and friends are doing important vocational work in communities across the country and wider world, however this work is often not well rewarded financially. For many, leaving a gift in a Will can be the most significant opportunity to make a lasting difference.

Leaving the College a gift in your Will is to leave a legacy to support the future work of St Stephen’s House.

A message from The Principal, July 2024:

LEAVING A LEGACY TO ST STEPHEN’S HOUSE

“I am writing to commend to you our new Legacy appeal, and to encourage you to support our work as we train new priests and provide new opportunities for teaching and learning about the Christian faith.

It has never been more important to ensure that priests are properly formed for their ministry in demanding times: to be people of prayer, effective apologists and preachers, and faithful pastors. Our ambition is to guarantee the future of this work at St Stephen’s House, by celebrating our legacy and securing our future financially, so that many more people in years to come can benefit from what we do.

St Stephen’s House was founded in 1876, and as our 150th anniversary approaches, our ambition is to secure the work of the college financially and reach more people with opportunities to study here.

The House remains as it has been since 1876 a place for forming priests to serve in the Catholic tradition of the Church of England. At the heart of our work this residential community continues, in a way that our ordained old members will all recognise. But since then, new opportunities for learning have become possible, and we are now very pleased to offer to students via the Edward King Centre for Pastoral Theology and the Institute of Sacred Music at Oxford a variety of non-residential programmes in Christian theology, liturgy, and most recently canon law.

We are grateful to our benefactors and regular donors through the 1876 Society for their ongoing financial support for our work. But we recognise that for many of our old members, legacy giving is the most practical and affordable way of contributing to our future.

Please consider leaving the House a legacy in your will, so that we can pass on to the next generation the spiritual legacy begun by Edward King when he founded us in 1876.”
